Music at the BoatShop: Ryan McKasson & Eric McDonald
Join us on the waterfront for a lively evening with Scottish music masters Ryan McKasson (fiddle) and Eric McDonald (guitar, mandolin). Both of these fine gents have built reputations as outstanding musicians and performers, contributing to various bands. Come down, relax and enjoy a lively night of Scottish, Irish and American Folk music!
Ryan McKasson is well-known as a performer, composer, collaborator, and teacher. In 1996, he was the youngest to win the National Scottish Fiddle Championship. A year later, the University of Southern California awarded him a Merit Scholarship for Viola Performance, where he studied with Donald McInnes. In 2004, Ryan and his sister, Cali, formed a band, The McKassons, and released two critically acclaimed albums, Tall Tales (2004) and Tripping Maggie (2006). Since 2002 he has also been fiddler for a renowned contra dance band, The Syncopaths, which tours nationally and has released two CDs, Five Gears (2010) and Rough Around the Edges (2005). Ryan has recorded with fellow fiddling star Hanneke Cassel on her albums Silver and For Reasons Unseen, and with the internationally-renowned duo Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas on their album Highlander's Farewell (2011). He has performed on such prestigious stages as the Kennedy Center (Millennium Stage) in Washington, DC, the Ford Amphitheater in LA, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY. Eric McDonald is one of today's finest young proponents of traditional Scottish music. Growing up in Boston, Eric absorbed traditional music from a young age. He's well-versed in the Scottish idiom and is known for performing with the trio Cantrip, Scottish fiddler Katie McNally and national Scottish fiddle champions Ryan McKasson and Brendan Carey Block. His scope is further broadened by his education at Boston's Berklee College of Music.
