NEVADA CITY, CA - Howlin' Rain, Brett Shady & His Band, and Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound
Saturday, July 16, The Miners Foundry Cultural Center presents a sonic adventure in rock n' roll with Oakland's rambling rockers Howlin' Rain, San Francisco's Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound and local Nevada City troubadour Brett Shady who will in a special performance be backed by a full band.
In 2004, former Comets on Fire frontman Ethan Miller felt the urge to pursue a more melodic sound in his music and express the influence of growing up on the Lost Coast in Northern California. The result was Howlin' Rain, a hard-hitting combination of psychedelia, blues, funk and classic 1970s arena rock. The group released their first self-titled album in 2006 on Birdman Records and immediately hit the road with Queens of the Stone Age. The band was praised for their warm roots rock a la 1970s Allman Brothers and the 1990s Black Crowes. In 2008, Howlin' Rain signed to uber producer Rick Rubin's (Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Avett Brothers) American Recordings and released Magnificent Fiend. Featuring big guitar solos, backed by Hammond organ and Miller's soul-man howl, the album garnered positive reviews and comparisons to jam bands like Widespread Panic, and classic rock bands such as Deep Purple, Moby Grape and Lynyrd Skynyrd. In December 2010, the band was chosen personally by Belle & Sebastian to perform at their second Bowlie Weekender festival presented by All Tomorrow's Parties in the UK. This spring the group released an EP to tease fans of their impending third album. BAND WEBSITE www.myspace.com/howlinrain
Local singer songwriter Brett Shady's songs paint a picture of heartbreak and regret and raise questions of good and evil deeply rooted in the American songwriting tradition. Of the songs on his new full-length album The Devil to Pay, Brett Shady says, "These are songs that were written out of frustration more than anything else." Having performed as a frontman for rock and punk bands for fifteen years, Brett began writing songs four years ago after a cross-country tour with the band Golden Shoulders. "I needed more artistic control and the opportunity to express myself that I wasn't getting performing other people's music."
With such disparate influences as Elliott Smith, Marty Robbins, Paul Simon, and Sam Cooke, Brett's songs paint a picture of heartbreak and regret and raise questions of good and evil deeply rooted in the American songwriting tradition. Most of the ten songs on The Devil to Pay were written about his move from Northern California's gold country to Los Angeles ten years ago, a period Brett says was "full of isolation, depression and struggling to find my place in the world." Recorded in Nevada City by Dana Gumbiner (Golden Shoulders, Joanna Newsom, Mariee Sioux), the album features an ensemble of veteran musicians including Lee Bob Watson, Adam Kline, Ehren Haas, David Nicholson and Jason Graham. San Francisco's Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound is a soundtrack for strange days and futures bright and bleak. But there is also a crooked thread that runs backward through every Assemble Head recordthe celestial trajectories of The Notorious Byrd Brothers and circa '70 Floyd; the dusty canyon stomps of Crazy Horse, slashing action pop of the savage young Who, Italian bastardizations of Lalo Schifrin cop movie scores, and the scuzz-bomb shrapnel of latter-day garage mongers like Mudhoney and Monoshock. http://teepeerecords.com/bands/assemble_head_in_sunburst_sound/index.php
