Class content 18 Reasons and Take My Word for It are excited to announce an 8-week after school creative writing class for 3rd-5th graders. This series is perfect for the kid who loves to write or loves to eat (or both!).

Class content Our focus will be on writing about many different aspects of food. Here are the class topics we are going to tackle together (subject to change):
9/21: Learn about meaty metaphors, saucy similes, odorous onomatopoeia, and the other literary tools used to write about food.
9/28: Yikes! It's alive! Make your broccoli (or any other beloved or despised food) come to life using personification.
10/5: You're a poet! Learn about and write your own odes to yumminess.
10/12: The edible autobiography. What are you made of? A tablespoon of soccer? A cup of family? A dash of homework?
10/19: Explore heritage through family recipes that have been passed down through the generations. You can use your own family's recipes, a friend's, or research about a culture where food is important (Italy! Mexico! Japan!)
10/26: Be a food detective! Research the origins and interesting details about a certain food you're curious about and then tell us all about it in writing.
11/2: Hunger Among Us: After learning facts about hunger in the San Francisco community, write a letter to the Mayor recommending your original solution to the problem.
11/9: Sci-Fi French Fries: Create a science fiction or fantasy story using some of the hard-to-pronounce ingredients from packaged food.
About the instructor: Claire Rawlins is currently working on her MFA in poetry from the University of San Francisco while tutoring children through 826 Valencia. She has taught English in three different countries, worked with over 300 students, edited several non-fiction books, and co-wrote the literary website livethefood.com. This will be her second season teaching with "Take My Word For It!".
Peanut Butter and the Pen is presented in collaboration with the Bay area writing program, "Take My Word For It!". Through innovative and thought-provoking curriculum, their creative writing programs help kids get to know their author-selves in a safe, supportive setting. www.takemywordforit.net

Question: |
Hi, my child likes to write but clearly needs help as shown in her Star testing scroes. Her reading is above grade level, but her writing is below basic. Will this class help her or only frustarte her? (4th garder, 9yrs) Thanks-Elena |
Answer: |
Hello Elena, Most important is that you child can get an idea from head onto paper. Grammar, spelling, etc, need not be perfect. Please email info@18reasons.org if you would like to chat more. |
