Red Molly (Cindy Novelo opens)
Orginal members, Laurie McAllister (banjo, bass) and Abbie Gardner (guitar, dobro) have now been joined by Austin singer-songwriter Molly Venter to fill out their lush, distinctive three-part harmonies. They deliver an eclectic, exciting mix of cover songs by well-known writers (Nanci Griffith, Steve Goodman, Bob Wills, Darrell Scott, etc.), originals, and songs by up-and-coming writers (Jonathan Byrd, Anthony da Costa) in a style incorporating bluegrass, gospel, blues, and contemporary folk. The Boston Globe says their bluegrass and old-time gospel sounds and buoyant three-part harmonies are so down-home "it's as if their notes are carried to you on the crisp air of the Ozarks." As Dirty Linen noted, "Red Molly makes music that is both modern and timeless, making old songs sparkle with new life and new ones sound like they were seasoned through generations."
Cindy Novelo blends her classical training with her deep love of folk music into haunting interpretations of traditional tunes and soulful original compositions. Inspired by her unique style, producer Tom Prasada-Rao coined a new term to describe her music - "Appalachian Classical." Kelley Hunt says "Cindy Novelo speaks through her viola, fiddle & guitar with passion, tenderness and magic."
