From the moment Jews arrived in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, their composers began contributing to the fabric of the America through their music. Nowhere was this better seen or heard than on the stages of Broadway. From Irving Berlin to Jerome Kern, George and Ira Gershwin, Hart, Rodgers, Hammerstein, Weill, Bernstein, Sondheim, and so many others, the music borne out of Yiddish and Jewish traditions quickly became known as "The American Songbook."
