Imagine seeing an old silent movie brought to life. A beautiful work of art from the beginning of the 20th century fused with a contemporary electronic soundtrack performed live. Add to that a wonderful meal cooked by the Coexist Community Kitchen and you have the Hot Pot Cinema.
Composer & musician Epistrophe Smith has created a wonderful contemporary electronic soundtrack to Cabiria, an epic 1914 Italian classic from the silent era. Set in ancient Sicily, Carthage, and Cirta around 200 BC. The film follows Cabiria, a beautiful young Sicilian girl sold into slavery by Phoenician pirates.
If you're looking for the ultimate cinema experience and love electronic music (think along the lines of Bonobo, Fourtet, Jon Hopkins and Nils Frahm), then this is for you.
Film Plot
In the panic surrounding an eruption of volcano Mt Etna, Cabiria and her nurse are abducted from their home and taken to Carthage where the pair are sold into slavery. Presumed killed in the volcanic eruption her parents mourn her loss and lose hope of ever seeing her again. Little do they know Cabiria is alive, but fate is not on her side. Intended to be an offering to the god Moloch and Kronos, the child eating statue, Cabiria's days are numbered. Can Cabiria's luck change? Will she survive this horrendous fate? Will she ever see Sicilly or her loving parents again?
The Soundtrack
Created in 2015 specifically for the film & performed live, the hypnotic, rich soundtrack boasts a textured harmonic flavour and fuses elements of improvisation with electronica. Along with more traditional orchestrated sections, Epistrophe Smith uses sub bass, crunchy snares, clicky noises and a barrage of cymbals to create this magnificent work.
Electronics build a foundation for the live instruments Epistrophe Smith uses to perform. Alongside electronic loops he integrates double & electric bass, keyboards, analogue synths, guitars and vocals. Performing solo with all the live instruments and electronics is no easy task, but the result is a captivating unique experience, which simply has to been seen.
