ArtCrawl Harlem and the Romare Bearden Foundation Fundraiser

WHAT: The event is a fundraiser for ArtCrawl Harlem; and the Romare Bearden Foundation, supporting the visual arts and promoting the community's diverse and vibrant art scene.
The Nanette Bearden Contemporary Dance Theater will give a benefit performance of On the Block, an original ballet inspired by the large scale collage The Block by celebrated African American artist Romare Bearden. This multi-media performance will take place at 7:00 pm on Thursday, July 7 at the Oberia D. Dempsey Multi-Service Center at 127 W. 127th St New York, NY 10027.
Original cast members Dudley Williams (dancer emeritus Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater) and Dyanne Harvey (Alvin Ailey and Forces of Nature Dance Company) are joined by Sarita Allen (former principal dancer with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater), who will appear alongside Walter Rutledge, the choreographer and associate artistic director of the troupe.
WHEN: Thursday, July 7, 2011, 7:00PM to 8:00PM, followed by a reception at the independent theater Maysles Cinema located at 343 Malcolm X Blvd with a short film on Bearden.

"The Block" is a six-panel mural, collage of cut and pasted paper on masonite, 48 X 216 inches, which is in the permanent modern art collection at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, immortalizes Lenox Avenue between 133 and 134 streets. The work combines elements of Bearden signature collage style, cubism and his unique use of perspective found in the "Interiors series". In the Interiors Bearden shows us both the bustling city streets and the intimate details inside the individual dwellings.
