Funky Feztival #2 Featuring Sgt. Funky & The Feztones
The Miners Foundry and the Sgt, Funky band are proud to present the 2nd annual Hippie Dance Party Friday, July 1, 2011, featuring special Bay Area guests the Feztones with an old-school authentic light show by San Francisco's own Liquid Lights. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the bands will perform alternating sets of the "songs you forgot you loved" beginning at 6:30, covering everything from Jefferson Airplane to Cream to the British Invasion to obscure Bay Area garage bands. Both groups specialize in psychedelic and 60s-era pop and perform in way-cool hippie outfits.
Dubbed the Funky Feztival, the two bands have Jonathan Lyerly "Elvis" Funky in common as he plays drums for Sgt. Funky and guitar for the Feztones. The "Tones" have been playing together for 15 years and specialize in Beatles, Stones and Who, among other great groups from that era. Lyerly has been playing guitar since he was 15 and played in punk and new wave bands in his salad days. His custom one-of-a-kind drum kit for Sgt. Funky features 60s-era posters and lights up. Much of Sgt Funky's unique sound is attributed to Michael Bremer, "Doc" Funky on electric banjo, and Michael Young "Uncle" Funky on lead guitar. Bremer runs the banjo through an effects board using a variety of picking and claw hammer techniques to create an entirely different rhythm sound while Young plays his '61 Fender Jaguar through a number of stomp boxes, his favorite being a Soviet-made distortion called "Big Muff," to get that acid-based sound. Bassist Larry "Lord Funky" Casserly is the newest Funky bringing the influence of Cream's Jack Bruce, Jack Casady from Jefferson Airplane and John Entwhistle of the Who to create the thunder for Sgt. Funky. Keyboardist Marty "Princess Funky" Dinwiddie rounds out the group, a classically training pianist who likes to add a bit of Rachmaninoff to her playing. Sgt Funky is a regular on the local non-profit fundraising scene and is famous for its Halloween and Valentine's Day gigs, in addition to numerous private parties. Both bands are known not only for their sense of humor but also for their eclectic tastes and corresponding set lists. "We love it when we break into, say, a Blind Faith cover and someone comes up to the stage and yells 'I can't believe you are playing Sea of Joy,'" said Young. "People have said that the last time they heard Psychotic Reaction, they were passed out in some dorm room." The Feztones, are from the Bay Area, and include Dave "Omar" Seabury on vocals, acoustic guitar and harmonica, Lyerly "El Jethro Hakim" on lead guitar, synth and vocals, Steve "Angl" Nelson on lead guitar, e-bow and percussion, Matt "Mnemo" Skinner on bass and David "Luchay" Luce on drums. This will be the second time Liquid Lights has done the visuals at the Hippie Dance Party. Steve's performances are deeply rooted in the traditional San Francisco style of psychedelic light shows. They are unique artistic projection experiences incorporating modern cutting edge graphics with the oil projectors and other techniques and imagery predating the modern video era. They've been doing light shows for nearly 20 years and their customers have included the Grateful Dead. Join us for a groovy time at the Foundry on Friday, July 1, 2011. Everyone is encouraged to come wearing hippie togs with love beads and flowered shirts. Food, beer and wine for sale. Tickets are $15.00 and available at Briarpatch, online at www.brownpapertickets.com and at the Miners Foundry Office. For more information call 530 265 5040.
