26 MILES by Quiara Alegria Hudes
"'26 Miles combines some of the far-out theatricality of Hudes's earliest plays with the structural control of ELLIOT. Olivia's private journey is a wild, one-in-a-lifetime road trip with her mother--a fantasy made real. It is Philadelphia meeting the landscape of the Wild American West, with all the longing and abandon that convergence implies.'" -American Theater Magazine
The Play: Eight years after a Cuban mother loses custody of her Jewish daughter, she is given a second chance. At 4:30 in the morning, she kidnaps the sick teenage girl and the two drive west in search of a remedy and their divergent American dreams.
The Playwright: Quiara Alegria Hudes' is a resident writer at New Dramatists and the Joyce Fellow at the Goodman Theatre. Her plays include Broadway's Tony Award-winning Best Musical IN THE HEIGHTS, BARRIO GRRRL! (book and lyrics, Helen Hayes nomination for Theater for Young Audiences), A SOLDIER'S FUGUE (Pulitzer Prize finalist), and YEMAYA'S BELLY (The Clauder Prize).
