DredgeFest Great Lakes

DredgeFest Great Lakes is a symposium, field expedition, and speculative design workshop about the human manipulation of sediments. It is an encounter between government agencies, designers, theorists, academics, corporate practitioners, industry experts, students, and the public.
DredgeFest Great Lakes runs August 14-21, 2015 in Minnesota. There are a wide variety of events and you are invited to participate in part or all of the festival.

DredgeFest Great Lakes is organized by the Dredge Research Collaborative and hosted by the University of Minnesota's School of Architecture and Department of Landscape Architecture. DredgeFest is a roving conference and workshop series. This is the third DredgeFest. The first was held in New York and the second in Louisiana.
THE SYMPOSIUM The symposium at DredgeFest Great Lakes will bring together a broad mix of disciplines, corporations, public agencies and organizations in live public conversation.
The symposium investigates the conference theme of shifting baselines across five specific topics: Freshwater Basin, Choreographing Sediments, Landscapes of Dredge, New Economies, Participation and Engagement.

- Peter Annin, author of Great Lakes Water Wars - Jen Maigret and Maria Arquero, architecture and landscape architecture, MAde Studio/University of Michigan - Neeraj Bhatia, architect, The Open Workshop/California College of the Arts
**UPDATE AUGUST 10: THE TOUR IS NOW SOLD OUT.** THE TOUR Duluth, Minnesota 12:00 pm-6:30 pm, Monday, August 17, 2014
We will take you on a guided tour of landscapes of dredge in Duluth, focused on dredged material uses and habitat creation. Tour guides from the City of Duluth, the Duluth Port Authority, and the Dredge Research Collaborative will narrate your journey. The tour will involve both bus and boat legs. All told, it will be approximately seven hours, with a focus on on-site land use interpretation and exploration. There will be frequent stops to check out sites of interest in person.
The tour will conclude with a reception at Clyde Iron Works.
**UPDATE AUGUST 10: As the tour is now sold out, the workshops are only offered without the tour included. Reduced price tickets reflecting this are the only workshop tickets on sale.** THE WORKSHOPS A cadre of local and international designers, including Mark Smout (Smout Allen/Bartlett SoA, UK), Kristi Cheramie (Ohio State University, US), Matthew Spremulli (University of Waterloo, CA/formerly with Lateral Office), and Fionn Byrne (University of Toronto, CA/incoming Kiley Fellow at the Harvard GSD), will join the Dredge Research Collaborative to lead these workshops. The workshops are hosted by our partners the School of Architecture and the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Minnesota.
