Screaming Man, A
Winner of the Jury Prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival, writer/director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun's A Screaming Man is a remarkable study of an individual and a whole society in turmoil. The story concerns Adam, Chad's first and only hotel pool attendant who must initially make way for his son. As a rebel uprising grows on the outskirts of Chad's capital city, however, a local political operative forces Adam to 'give' his son to the army. Echoes of the story of Abraham and Isaac give A Screaming Man a restrained but resonant elemental edge, making the film's climax even more moving and powerful.
