JAZZ IT UP! @ Sorrento Restaurant in Westfield
New Jersey's hot JAZZ IT UP!jazz and blues concert event brings to you on the last Wednesday of every month a selection of special guest music artists at Sorrentos Italian Restaurant, located at 631 Central Avenue, Westfield, NJ. On Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at 7pm come enjoy the special and sophisticated Brazilian Jazz sounds of percussionist Mauricio de Souza and his BOSSA BRASIL quartet in concert. Born in Brasília, Brazil, Maurício de Souza is a jazz drummer who easily performs in both traditional jazz and Brazilian jazz styles. His good taste and finesse have allowed him to play in numerous settings with various accomplished musicians. Maurício studied with world renowned jazz drummer and master teacher, Joe Morello for eight years. He also had a year of private studies with distinguished all-round percussion teacher Glenn Weber. Aside from the inspiration of Mr. Morello, other influential performers include Buddy Rich, Airto Moreira, Dave Weckl, Roy Haynes, and Bill Stewart. Since settling in Northern New Jersey in 2004, de Souza has been very active in the NY/NJ metropolitan area, performing at some of the finest jazz clubs not only as a side man but also as a band leader. In New York, de Souza has been heard at Smoke Jazz Club, Smalls Jazz Club, Garage Jazz Club, Cornelia St. Cafe, Lenox Lounge, Bar Next Door, Cachaça Jazz N' Samba Club, Cleopatra's Needle, Kitano Hotel, Jule's Bistro, Cutting Room, Via Brasil, Brazil Grill, Village Underground, New York Athletic Club, and Bubby's (Brooklyn) to name a few. Internationally, Maurício has performed in Brasilia, Brazil at well known jazz venues. Other performances include appearances as guest percussionist in numerous orchestral concerts with the Bergen Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Orchestra and the Orquestra Sinfônica do Teatro Nacional Cláudio Santoro de Brasilia (Brazil). De Souza's group, Bossa Brasil performs the most sophisticated Brazilian music, including the exotic rhythms of the Baião and the Chorinho. The repertoire includes compositions from Brazil's most outstanding artists such as; Tom Jobim, Egberto Gismonti, Roberto Menescal, Milton Nascimento, Edu Lobo, Victor Assis Brasil, Hermeto Pascoal, Baden Powell and Pixinguinha. The group members include Mauício de Souza on drums, Andrew Beals on alto sax, Jery Weir on vibes and John Lenis on bass. Showtime is from 7pm to 9pm. Seating and dinner service for the concert experience starts at 6pm and continues during the event. Sorrento Restaurant, home of the original tomato pie and more since 1870, offers the perfect ambience for a relaxing evening of good music, good food, good friends and good times. Plenty of free off street parking. BYOB is welcome. Concert tickets are priced at $29.95 per person and includes a choice of a Music Menu dinner entrée, dessert and beverage.
