The Three Bears
"What's For Dinner?" Set in a remote French village, The Three Bears follows the spiraling disintegration of an American ex-pat family struggling to do the right thing: stick it out for the kid.
The play follows George, the over-controlling pilot who imprisons his wife and daughter in his own fantasy of the perfect Francophile life; Susan, the deeply troubled, unhappy and ultimately suicidal mother, and Marie, the daughter who is forced to painfully observe the regular assaults on her younger self, while all at the same time living out her own, now fractured life.
Written and developed at Columbia University's School of the Arts, under the mentorship of acclaimed playwrights Charles Mee & Kelly Stuart, The Three Bears was last seen at Manhattan Repertory Theatre's Winterfest and Thirteenth Street Repertory Company's New Work Reading Series. Simone Marie Martelle (Playwright/Director) grew up in Toulouse, France, received her BSc. in International Relations from the London School of Economics and is currently a final year MFA Playwriting candidate at Columbia University, studying with Charles Mee, Kelly Stuart, Frank Pugliese, Lucy Thurber and Dr. Carol Rocamora. For her thesis play, Simone is being personally mentored by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, David Lindsay-Abaire.
