The Secret Adventures of Fat Woman & Remedial Girl
This is the story of Louise Pang-an eleven-year old girl stuck in a family of overachievers-and her best friend, Brenda Lolly, the fattest girl in school. Louise suspects her grandmother is trying to kill her, only to uncover an even more horrifying truth.

This one-woman show features family secrets, a resurrection, Wonder Woman, a spin-off of the Yakuza crossed with "The Golden Girls," Cantonese death threats, and a brief reference to a glamorous superheroine who still manages to look good even when she's fighting evil (and that's just the first half...).

THE STORY BEHIND "REMEDIAL GIRL":

It started out as a short story code-named "Crazy Grandma" that just got longer and longer. After many years and countless drafts, it became a book called The Secret Adventures of Fat Woman & Remedial Girl. (Actually, a manuscript in a box awaiting the day readers might embrace a literary novel dealing with issues of life and death from the point-of-view of a not-so-bright eleven-year old with the vocabulary of a second-grader.) Eventually it morphed into an audiobook on CDs that sat in a much smaller container for a few years until the Internet was invented-okay, it wasn't the Internet's fault, it was me. I was busy!-and everyone in the world with access to the Web could discover Remedial Girl and learn all sorts of horrible secrets about stuff they never wanted to know in the first place.

Now The Secret Adventures of Fat Woman & Remedial Girl is a 90-minute one-woman show debuting at the San Francisco Fringe Festival.

My name is Sarah Lau and I've been telling stories since I was a kid. My dream is to entertain and educate a wider audience with the kind of stories that don't often get told. As Brenda puts it during a fight with Louise, "who would want to read a story about a girl who's dumb?" Or Chinese? Or fat, for that matter? Or confront a grandmother who may be a killer, or hear a secret no mother should ever tell a child? Yet it is in these stories-neither exotic nor sentimental-that we find pieces of our lives and ourselves.
Please visit RemedialGirl.com to see video clips and learn more about the show.

Note: The "party" scene contains a brief burst of firecrackers (not actual fireworks, just audio) and mild cursing consisting of a few 'h*ll's, 'd*mn's, 'cr*p's, and the following line of dialogue: "Sh*t. Sh*t, sh*t, sh*t! We are in big *ss trouble." That's about as profane as it gets. Unless, of course, you happen to understand Cantonese....
