La Calisto
Francesco Cavalli's opera La Calisto (set to a brilliant libretto by Giovanni Faustini) premiered in Venice in 1651. Vertical Player Repertory brings it to Brooklyn's "Venice," the courtyard of a 19th C factory building on the notorious Gowanus Canal, hosted by Proteus Gowanus as part of its year-long "Paradise" exhibit. The story tells of Jove's seduction of Calisto, virgin follower of Diana. Poor Calisto, changed into a bear by Jove's jealous wife Juno, nevertheless gained immortality when Jove placed her in the heavens, where we can now see her as Ursa Major, familiarly known as the Big Dipper, which never sets below the horizon.
Jennifer Peterson, Conductor and Harpsichord; Judith Barnes, Director.
