Native American Flute Songs and Stories at Bloedel Reserve
In a show especially for children, Gary Stroutsos performs world flute music drawn from traditional cultures which evokes the spirit of place and the voices of the land. He is passionate about sharing the traditional music, ancient stories, and cultural legacies learned from the Native American masters that he has been privileged to study with. He plays a variety of beautiful hand-crafted instruments, from tiny stone whistles to huge double piped flutes that mimic the sounds of birds and the wind. He says, "Bringing this time-honored music to life for new listeners is now the most important aspect of my work, because music touches the soul, and is our true universal means of communication." Gary will be joined by drummer and percussionist David Revelli. After a successful career with a variety of bands in the Bay Area, which included touring and recording with artists such as Jewel, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Sheryl Crow, David moved to the Northwest to pursue a career in education. He teaches 4th grade at Hazel Valley Elementary School in Burien. Gary and David are deeply committed to sharing their music with young audiences. After hearing Gary's concert, a young listener wrote: "Thank you for telling me all those cool facts. You really opened my window when you played the song on the Elk flute. When I came back home, I felt I could hear the birds more clearly." Come hear these lovely flute stories.
