John grew up in New York City in a musical family listening to jazz and classical pianists, many of whom he heard live including Mary Lou Williams, Kenny Baron, Oscar Peterson, Richie Beirach, Kirk Lightsey, Ralph Towner, and others. He loved the recordings of Stravinsky, J.S. Bach, Mozart, Ravel, Ray Charles, Erroll Garner, Teddy Wilson, Wynton Kelly, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock. He studied at the Eastman School in Rochester, NY. He eventually migrated back to NYC where he studied with John Corigliano, Stanley Cowell, Richie Beirach, Joanne Brackeen, Phil Markowitz, and Frank Martori. John's versatility as a jazz pianist is most evident in his work with Nat Adderly, Bobby Shew, Ravi Coltrane, Pharaoh Saunders and Billy Higgins, among others.
Bassist-composer Chuck Metcalf's music-teacher parents started him on violin and piano in elementary school. To his mother's dismay, by age 12 he was playing boogie-woogie instead of Mozart, so at age 15 he was encouraged to take up the bass. That year the first bebop recordsand Charlie Parker particularlycaptured his soul. In addition to touring with his own quartet, Chuck has toured with Dexter Gordon, Anita O'Day, Joe Venuti and Frank Morgan and has performed with Mose Allison, Larry Coryell, Art Pepper, Bobby Shew and Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, among others.
Pete Amahl, Santa Fe's legendary percussionist, has played around the world and across the state. He's a founding member of the New Mexico Jazz Workshop and co-originator of the "Jazz in Madrid" annual concert series.
