3RD ANNUAL JAZZ VESPERS CELEBRATION AT ST. COLUMBA CATHOLIC CHURCH
Jazz Vespers is a unique representation of the centuries old tradition of evening worship in music that presents a celebration of African American musical forms, spirituals, blues, gospel and jazz. Presented by the United Methodist Men of Downs Memorial United Methodist Church, this year Jazz Vespers will be held at St. Columba Catholic Church, 6401 San Pablo Ave,in North Oakland.Bill Bell along with the Jazz Connection Quintet, vocalist Stanley Bull and Heidi Hill and narrator Joe McKenzie will include all phases of Vesper Service, an opening prayer, invocation and the passing of the peace while portraying the development of African American music from Africa to its present forms. The Jazz Connection Quintet consists of Bill Bell on piano, Dezon Clayborn, drums, Charlie McCarthy, saxophone, James Tinsley, trumpet and Eric Vogler on bass. Bill Bell,know as the Jazz Professor by his many students, is also well known as a religious and choral director. JAZZ VESPERS is a fundraising program for the United Methodist Men who sponsor a number of programs at Downs Memorial United Methodist Church and in the surrounding community.
