Donald Spoto's Possessed: The Life of Joan Crawford is the first serious biography of one of the most electrifying divas in movie history, which reveals a much more sympathetic and intelligent portrait than we've seen before. Joan Crawford was one of the greatest film stars of all time, but also one of the most misunderstood. The image many have is that of the unstable, abusive mother in Christina Crawford's Mommie Dearest. With this book, Donald Spoto, the author of many biographies (Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Alfred Hitchcock, et al.), provides a contrasting portrait of Crawford as a courageous, ambitious woman with good business sense, whose strength and drive made her a forerunner in her field. The years right after World War II were among the best of Crawford's career as she starred in a series of classic films (Mildred Pierce, Humoresque) that explored the changing roles of women in post-war America. In Otto Preminger's powerful Daisy Kenyon, Crawford stars as a New York fashion illustrator who finds herself in a love triangle with a married lawyer (Dana Andrews) and a troubled ex-GI (Henry Fonda).
