The Symbolism of the Sand Mandala
ABOUT: Unity of Fairfax is pleased to present a 6-day event with Tibetan Buddhist Monks from Drepung Loseling Monastery, located near India. As part of their world tour with The Mystical Arts of Tibet, the monks will be visiting the D.C. area from August 4 through August 9. While at Unity of Fairfax, they will construct a mandala sand painting and present traditional rituals and performances. Unity of Fairfax invites you to attend The Symbolism of the Sand Mandala on Friday, August 7 from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
WHAT: From all the artistic traditions of Tantric Buddhism, that of painting with colored sand ranks as one of the most unique and exquisite. Millions of grains of sand are painstakingly laid into place on a flat platform over a period of days or weeks to form the image of a mandala. To date, the monks have created mandala sand paintings in more than 100 museums, art centers, and colleges and universities in the United States and Europe.
The Mandala is a sacred cosmogram used as an object of contemplation. It depicts the pure nature of the world in which we live, as well as how we can live most effectively. By creating a sand Mandala, we bring the creative energy of that sacred dimension into our lives and attune ourselves to this natural perfection.
WHEN: Friday, August 7 from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
