Compass Project Relocation Celebration
Purchase a raffle ticket (or tickets) for a chance to win a 2-hour rowing excursion for 6-8 in a Crestwood 34' rowing gig in Casco Bay or Biddeford Pool to help raise some funds for a transition of the Compass Project to Biddeford.
As of July 1, 2015, the Compass Project, a boat building program for at-risk youth currently located in Portland, will become a program of Engine, an arts organization in Biddeford, Maine. The Compass Project was formerly a program of Spurwink, a behavioral health agency and prior to that, had its own non-profit status. The transition was facilitated by Spurwink to find a home with a more design and maker-oriented mission. Engine's interest in supporting and growing the young maker community dovetails with the project-based learning focus of the program.
The Compass Project's shop will be housed in donated space at Biddeford High School, where Biddeford students will participate in three programs. Engine, as the parent organization, will be able to utilize the makerspace for other hands-on workshops as well, expanding their digital fabrication lab to include traditional tools.
COMPASS PROJECT Founded in 2002, Compass Project has been serving at-risk youth in Maine for more than 10 years. Through project-based learning and mentoring relationships fostered by staff and volunteers, students build academic skills, develop self-esteem and confidence, and prepare themselves for a role in the workplace and their communities. Compass Project has served more than 2,000 students. http://www.compassproject.org.
ENGINE, located in the heart of Biddeford, Maine, is a non-profit arts organization. Engine's mission is to make arts-driven programming, cultural development, and sustainable creative entrepreneurialism an explicit community value and civic priority in Biddeford. ENGINE is the home to the Maine Fablab makerspace in addition to running at contemporary gallery space at 265 Main street. http://www.feedtheengine.org
