ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
TENOR ROBERT MACNEIL Shafter native, Robert MacNeil has been praised by the Los Angeles Times for possessing a voice that is "clarion" and "clear". Mr. MacNeil returns to San Francisco Opera for their 2010-11 season in Werther and Le Nozze di Figaro. He made his San Francisco Opera debut in 2008 as the High Priest of Neptune in Mozart's Idomeneo and returned for their production of Salome in 2009. Mr. MacNeil most recently performed with LA Opera in Lohengrin, after previous appearances including The Stigmatized, Fidelio, Il Trovatore, Der Rosenkavalier, Festival Play of Daniel, Tannhäuser, La Bohème and Il Tabarro. The tenor made his debut with the famed Ojai Festival under Kent Nagano in Orff's Die Kluge and recorded the role of Martin in Copland's opera The Tender Land, which was released on the Koch International Label.
An accomplished concert artist, the tenor has been soloist in more than sixty performances of Handel's Messiah. He has soloed with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in performances of Elijah, the Sydney Choral Festival in the Berlioz Requiem and in Orff's Carmina Burana with the Central Union Philharmonic in Beijing. He made his Carnegie Hall solo debut in Britten's The World of the Spirit and appeared in Rome with the Orchestra Roma Symphonia in Verdi's Requiem.
The tenor, a National Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, has his B.M. from Chapman University and M.M. from the University of Southern California. At the University of Southern California, he was a Marilyn Horne Scholar and was named Most Outstanding Graduate Student from the Thornton School of Music. Mr. MacNeil is currently on the voice faculty of World Mission University in Los Angeles and was on the faculties of Citrus College and Irvine Valley College.
PIANIST DANIEL FALTUS After capturing the opening two operas of the L.A. Opera season in a one-man show, Daniel Faltus was praised by Placido Domingo for his" Beautiful piano-playing" and "Excellent comic-timing. "Mr. Faltus has performed at the Kennedy Center, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Radio City Music Hall and Lincoln Center's New York City Opera. He has concertized throughout North America and in Mexico, where he was seen in "Diva on the Verge" with celebrated soprano Julia Migenes, who said "Daniel is fearless on stage." Mr. Faltus continues to be Music Director for many of L. A. Opera's outreach programs. He conducted the Los Angeles premiere of Brundibar and his suite from the opera for soprano and piano was performed at the Museum of Tolerance. Mr. Faltus is often hired to explain and illuminate opera and other music to groups both large and small. He was heard in an all-Brahms program at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's Sundays at Four series, heard on KUSC, and he has frequently been Master of ceremonies and Music Director for a summer concert tour of libraries and parks for L.A. Opera, including Plaza Sweets in Beverly Hills. Mr.Faltus is an experienced vocal coach, conversant in a wide variety of musical styles. An enthusiast of American musical theater and standard popular songs, he has conducted musicals in the U.S. and Europe and he wrote a show incorporating this music for the Getty museum. He frequently entertains at parties and corporate events. At the Hollywood Bowl he was Music Director for a show of theatre music and coached Leonard Bernstein's Mass, which was performed there by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Under the auspices of the N.E.A., he played recitals for the Marines in 29 Palms, CA.
Also an actor, Mr. Faltus played opposite Academy Award- winner Faye Dunaway in the National tour of the Tony Award-winning play Master Class, and was seen in the award-winning film, Don: Plain & Tall, which garnered five best-picture film festival awards. Television appearances include the Emmy-winning Monk, Alias, cult-favorite Firefly and various sit-coms and commercials Opposite Shia LeBoeuf, he was Chives, the English butler on the Emmy-nominated series, Even Stevens.
Other musical highlights include: a concert featuring works by black composers/lyricists and selections from Porgy and Bess, an All-American program, Music Directing L.A. Opera's Opera Tales, an all-Ellington cabaret show, master classes for NATS and WMU and another show for the Getty that was performed in association with the Fragonard exhibit. He re-orchestrated/arranged and conducted Brundibar at Walt Disney Concert Hall's Red Cat Theatre and taught theory and conducted the orchestras at the Harvard-Westlake school. In Washington D.C., he gave master classes with Martina Arroyo and played a Cole Porter show as part of the National Opera Association's national convention. Recent performances include recitals in the south, conducting City of Angels and Pippin in Los Angeles and playing a forte-piano as part of a Jane Austen-themed benefit at the Broad stage.Summer plans include recitals and a concert based on the theatre posters of David Byrd. After hearing Mr. Faltus in concert, composer Jake Heggie commented "Daniel is an elegant musician and a wonderful, soulful artist. I enjoyed his performances immensely."
