Crazy Ladies
Back by popular demand after their smash success with "Christie in Love" in January, Beacon theater group cabot | andcompany will present "CRAZY LADIES" an evening featuring Arthur Kopit's one act dark comedy about celebrity and insanity "Chamber Music," paired with a "Crazy Cabaret" second half with musical theater and pop songs about feeling, literally or figuratively, insane. The production will run June 2 11, with performances on Thursday and Friday evenings at 8 and on Saturdays at both 3 and 8, at the Railroad Playhouse. Group discounts available! Contact info@rrplayhouse.org
Arthur Kopit's play "Chamber Music" is about eight women in an insane asylum who plot the destruction of their arch enemies, the men's ward. The only hitch? They all think they are a famous woman from history! Joan of Arc, Gertrude Stein, Amelia Earhart, Queen Isabella of Spain, Susan B. Anthony, Mrs. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and others collude, cajole and attack each other with wit, verve and venom, during the disastrous downward spiral of their "Improvement (and someday governing) Committee" meeting. Contemporary audience members who have ever sat through any type of committee or business meeting will definitely recognize with laughter the various "types" around this table. Things only get worse when it comes to life that while all the women think they're somebody famous, ONE of them might actually be telling the truth!
Rounding out the evening, the "Crazy Cabaret" will celebrate the role that insanity, real or imagined, has played out in our culture through popular song. From Patsy Cline and Stephen Sondheim to Lady Gaga, songwriters often turn to thoughts of feeling, well, just a little, you know.
