6th Annual Anti-Corporate Film Festival: "Dreamland"
Iceland, a volcanic island nation slightly smaller than Kentucky with a population of just 320,000 people (roughly the same as St. Louis), was a lab rat for the hyper-financialized global economy.
A modern, highly educated, and technological society blessed with stunning natural beauty and abundant resources (especially hydro-electric and geo-thermal energy, which offer it independence from fossil fuels), Iceland represented the model of a sustainable, 21st century economy -- until its government decided to use that cheap and clean energy to lure American aluminum giant Alcoa to build an enormous smelting plant there.
