Zepparella In Concert
All-female Zeppelin cover-goddesses Zepparella, bring their new lineup to the Miners Foundry on May 20, 2011. The four women of Zepparella are intent on bringing the passion, the beauty, the aggression, the musicality of Led Zeppelin alive. The kickass band is comprised of lead singer from Portland Miaya Shambry, Guitarists Gretchen Menn and Angeline Saris, and drummer extraordinaire Clementine. After a stellar five years, vocalist Anna Kristina and bassist Nila Minnerok will be leaving Led Zeppelin powerhouse ZEPPARELLA to pursue other interests. With two live albums, countless shows and an unforgettable journey under their belts, the band members have amicably opted for a change. Angeline Saris and Zepparella lead singer Miaya Shambry just joined the band recently. "[Guitarist] Gretchen [Menn] and I are beyond excited for this new incarnation," said Clementine, Zepparella drummer and founding member. "Angeline is such an amazing player that playing with her feels like flying. And Miaya is the kind of singer who comes along only every so often. Watching her develop and become the powerhouse she's destined to be has been amazing." The change in lineup will definitely vary the set as opposed to what Nevada City has seen before from Zepparella. How to honor the legacy of a band deemed sacred? To tread on holy ground is perilous, and must be done with the intent and spirit of a disciplePay attention to the intricacies of the magic, explore the far ends of the innovation, strive for ever-growing ability, and let the purity of the love for the music drive it all. Drummer Clementine is the founding member of ZEPPARELLA. From the beginning of her musical career, her goal has been to be onstage every night. The pursuit of that goal has led Clementine to constantly tour the US and Europe in projects as diverse as Bottom, AC/DShe, The House Of More, The Solid, and Francis Bakin. She tackles the best rock drumming ever written with her own emotionally powerful style, bringing the Motown influence of the Bonham groove to the forefront. The profound musical connection established with Gretchen Menn (guitar), Miaya Shambry (vocals), and Angeline Saris (bass) creates the bond required to do this great music justice. It was under the tutelage of classical guitarist Phillip DeFremery, a student of Andrés Segovia, that guitarist Gretchen Menn began her path on the instrument. Playing with tireless passion and constantly seeking out new challenges, her projects are often unconventional, genre-bending expressions combining elements of classical, rock, progressive, jazz, and metal. On influences, Gretchen has never tired of her initial inspirationsEric Johnson, Steve Morse, Frank Zappa, and Jeff Beck. But she has loved Jimmy Page's guitar playing longer than she has played the guitar. It was through the music of Led Zeppelin that she found a gateway into music that resonated deeply with her, creating a love for guitar-oriented music, and, ultimately, the guitar. Singer Miaya Shambry, the latest sensation from Portland, Oregon, fronts the Zepparella machine. She has performed with Jon Anderson from Yes and Nick Harmer from Death Cab For Cutie, and toured the US three times as a member of the Paul Green School of Rock West-Coast Allstars. From forging her talent in a gospel choir, she has gone on to convey the darkest depths of blues, and the primal screams of metal. Her influences are eclectic, including Brandi Carlile, Janis Joplin, Tracey Chapman, Iron Maiden, and, of course Robert Plant. The nature of Led Zeppelin's music allows Miaya to explore the wide range of her powerful voice and broad capabilities. Bassist Angeline Saris has musical passions that span jazz to speed metal, R&B to rock, Cuban to hip-hop, and flamenco to rockabilly. Angeline has done it all - and does it extremely well. It is this versatility, her rock-solid time, tastefully crafted bass lines, and unequivocal skills that give her the ability to bring cohesion to the eclectic Zeppelin catalog. Angeline credits John Paul Jones as a main influence, so it is no surprise that she shines as she interprets his thunder. Zepparella continues to explore their own improvised magic within the framework of Zeppelin's mighty songs! Things get pretty crazy at Zepparella shows, so be prepared to enjoy amazing approaches to some of Led Zeppelin's greatest tunes while getting in touch with your wild side. You never know what will happen. Doors open at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 20 and tickets are $18.00 in advance or $20.00 at the door. Tickets are available at Briarpatch in Grass Valley, or online at www.brownpapertickets.com.
