The Comedy of Errors - A Staged Reading of William Shakespeare's Shortest Play
A tragedy of Shakespearian proportions separates a family and sets the stage for this raucous story of mistaken identities. Set in the City of Ephesus, identical twin brothers, in search of each other, are accompanied by their slaves - also identical twins. The masters share the same first name and the slaves also share their first name; thus, sometime around 1589, the names Antipholus and Dromio entered into the theatrical lexicon and into the hearts of theatergoers ever since. A rivalry between the cities of Ephesus and Syracuse places the patriarch of this star-crossed family, Egeon, at risk of his life as he searches for the family's missing parts. A race against time (Egeon's pending execution) put the requisite pressure on the characters' actions in this fast paced comedy. Shorter by half than any other Shakespeare play, "The Comedy of Errors" offers a fun and uplifting journey through the Bard's rich poetry and ironic commentary on human nature.
This play was adapted into the famous Rodgers and Hart musical, The Boys From Syracuse, which has been delighting audiences since it opened on Broadway in 1938.
