Preservation Sacramento 2015 Historic Home Tour, featuring Richmond Grove
Preservation Sacramento's annual Historic Home Tour (the first under our new name, but the 40th since we started them as the SOCA Home Tour) showcases architectural treasures in the Richmond Grove neighborhood, which has never before been the site of a Sacramento home tour, and stretches into the nearby neighborhoods of Midtown, Poverty Ridge and R Street. The homes of Richmond Grove (bounded by W, R, 12th and 19th streets) include Queen Anne, 20th Century Revival, Arts & Crafts and Art Deco architecture.Neighborhood landmarks include a Buddhist temple, a Portuguese Catholic church, and the vibrant R Street corridor, once an industrial area and route of California's first railroad, now known for its restaurants, art galleries, entertainment venues and artists' lofts.

This year's tour includes a variety of properties expressing the diversity of Sacramento's central city neighborhoods, including an industrial warehouse converted to residential use, a Craftsman bungalow owned by a board member of the Bank of Italy (now known as Bank of America), and the Prairie Style home of one of the city's most respected judges. Tour visitors will get an inside look at each house on the tour, guided by docents, and a supplemental tour of notable sites within the neighborhood, documented in a full-color tour brochure. The Sacramento Model T Club will be in attendance, displaying their restored Ford Model T automobiles in front of the homes on the tour.

Tickets cost $30 the day of the tour, $25 in advance, $20 for current Preservation Sacramento members.

Redeem tickets at the street fair at 1823 14th Street (the southeast corner of 14th and R Street.) At the ticket booth, you will receive a wristband and a guidebook. The illustrated tour book tells you the story of each house and guides you to them, at your own pace. The wristband gets you in the door of each house for a guided, docent-led tour of the building. The guidebook also includes a supplemental tour of historic buildings and sites of interest in one of Sacramento's most culturally diverse and architecturally significant neighborhoods. All of the homes are located within a walking radius of approximately one mile, but pedicabs will be available for hire at the street fair.

In conjunction with the home tour, there will be a free street fair at the southeastern corner of 14th and R Street (1823 14th Street) that will include local contractors and artisans specializing in historic home rehab and remodeling, businesses, artists and craft persons displaying their wares, and nonprofit, advocacy and local history organizations. The fair will feature live performances by Obsidian Butterfly dance troupe at noon, and Koyasan Spirit of Children Taiko Group at 1:00 PM.

There is limited street parking in the neighborhood, so Preservation Sacramento strongly recommends using bicycles or Regional Transit to attend the home tour. The 13th Street and 16th Street light rail stations provide access from Gold Line and Blue Line light rail trains, each is within two blocks of the street fair at 14th and R Street. Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates (SABA) will provide complimentary bike valet service for those arriving on bicycles.

Formerly the Sacramento Old City Association (SOCA), Preservation Sacramento is a citywide 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Sacramento's irreplaceable historic places and encouraging quality urban design through advocacy, outreach, and activism.
