KING DAVID, A Dramatic Musical Based on the Story of David. Music by Alan Menkin and Tim Rice.
KING DAVID A Dramatic Musical Based on the Story of David. Music by Alan Menken, Lyrics by Tim Rice
This work was originally conceived for an outdoor piece to commemorate the 3,000th anniversary of the city of Jerusalem. In 1997 the Disney Theatrical Corporation performed the music on Broadway in a concert version for 8 performances only. This is world-class music by Alan Menken (Newsies, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and The Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Enchanted, Tangled) and Tim Rice (Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Beauty and The Beast, Evita, Lion King, Aida).
We have the honor and permission from Alan Menken to perform KING DAVID this summer at 3Crosses! The music is spectacular and the story amazing and true.
The story recounts the life of the shepherd-poet who would become the great king of Israel. It begins with the tale of the prophet Samuel and Israel's first king, Saul, who initially disagree over the choice of David as successor. Saul comes around, virtually adopting David as his own son when the young shepherd fells the giant Philistine warrior Goliath with a sling. The story continues with David's ascendancy, his marriage to Saul's daughter Michal, the rivalry with Saul, friendship with Saul's son Jonathan, infamous affair with Bathsheba and the rebellion and death of his beloved son Absalom. It ends as the aged David anoints Solomon, son of Bathsheba, his successor.
