The Old Settler
Directed by: Kenetha carr
Starring: Alicia Haymer, Keisha Cunningham, James Rudolph and Tia Ferrell This is at once an American Classic and a Nashville professional premiere that will leave you laughing, loving, and remembering the things that bind us to family. Young Husband Witherspoon has arrived in 1940s Harlem, NY, fresh from Frogmore, South Carolina--as country as he can be--in search of his missing girlfriend Lou Bessie. After moving into a rented room in the apartment of sisters Elizabeth and Quilly, two church-going ladies who have opened their home to him, he begins spending a lot of time with Elizabeth. As the relationship evolves into a romantic one, tensions arise with Quilly, who disapproves of her sister chasing after a man decades younger. When Lou Bessie appears on the scene again and realizes that her boy toy Husband may have fallen for a woman old enough to be his mother, sparks fly that threaten to ignite a family household.
"It's a play that chooses to remember the good without the bad, being about the relationship of two aging, church-going sistersand what happens when a handsome young fellow, newly arrived from the Deep South, rents a room in the apartment they shareFor all of its decent sentiments, THE OLD SETTLER avoids sentimentality. It has the authenticity and lack of pretense of an Early American sampler." NY Times.
