Winning: The Racing Life of Paul Newman
The Plaza Playhouse Theater presents the new documentary film, WINNING: THE RACING LIFE OF PAUL NEWMAN, directed by Adam Carolla and co-directed by Nate Adams on Friday, June 26 at 7pm. It features archival footage of Paul Newman and interviews with Tom Cruise, Robert Redford, Patrick Dempsey, Robert Wagner, Joanne Woodward, Jay Leno, Mario Andretti, Michael Andretti, Bob Sharp, Sam Posey, Sebastien Bourdais and many other in the racing profession.
While Newman became one of the most beloved screen icons, many people were not aware of his long time involvement in auto racing, something he took very seriously and which led him to star in the 1969 film aptly titled "Winning".
Carolla, a longtime radio and podcast personality, began restoring and racing vintage racers in 2003 and acquired his first Paul Newman race car (a 1985 300 ZX GT1) in 2008. Since then, he has purchased, restored and raced six other cars driven by Newman.
Carolla also gained a richer fondness for Newman's passion for racing and his abilities as a driver. "There were so many incredible stories about Newman over his 35-year racing career I was amazed that no one wanted to tell his story, said Carolla. "I felt it was important and needed to be out there, so we did it." This is Carolla's second directing effort this year, following the recently released comedy "Road Hard".
The documentary is serving to highlight the annual Rods and Roses Classic Car Show in Carpinteria on Saturday, June 27 from 9am to 3pm on Linden Avenue.
Tickets for WINNING are $10 and available on line at Seastrand, 919 Linden Ave. during regular business hours (check or cash only) or at the box office the night of the show.
The documentary was produced by Carolla, Nate Adams and Mike August. Executive producers were Norm Pattiz and Matt D'Andria.
