Departures: A Song Cycle
Eight strangers stand at a suburban railway platform on an unremarkable weekday afternoon. As their train is delayed further, they put down their crumpled Metros, pocket their bleeping smartphones, and begin to share their secrets, hopes and fears.
Departures was developed through interviews with communities across the country, documenting our nation's preoccupations. From immigration to misogyny to internet dating, these real-world stories have then been adapted into a cycle of songs using a diverse array of musical styles.
This new musical, by Cameron Mackintosh award-winning duo Bunce and Malone, is a modern-day Canterbury Tales, a celebration of friendliness, and a snapshot of modern British life.
'Astonishingly inventive witty and evocative' (Sunday Times) 'Departures shines like a jewel' (BroadwayBaby). 'Well-realised and beautifully orchestrated' (KettleMag) 'Beautiful and clever' (BoxDust.com) 'This is what the Edinburgh Fringe is all about' (EdinburghGuide.com).
