Things That Are Heard
THINGS THAT ARE HEARD
The Saga Continues... Things That Are Heard is a rare bird indeed - the band started 2 years ago as a one-off vanity project to celebrate drummer / composer Dave Wayne's 50th birthday, featuring all-original compositions. Nearly 2 years later, they still exist and are continuing to play uncompromising, all-original instrumental jazz-rock-type music influenced by Zappa, Ornette, Soft Machine, Mahavishnu, Deerhoof, and The Meters. There's basically no other band in New Mexico doing the sort of off-kilter, quirky, non-genre-specific that they come up with on a routine basis. At least none that will admit to it! This gig will be the first to feature newest member, trombonist Christian Pincock. This incredibly unique 2 trombone / 2 guitar lineup promises to bring some very dark and unusual timbres to the forefront. Christian Pincock -trombone, Paul Bossert -trombone, Ross Hamlin -guitar, Andy Gabrys -guitar, Justin Bransford -electric bass, Dave Wayne -drums & iPhone
"...it looks like I might just have a new favorite local band: Dave Wayne's The Things That Are Heard. The band thrilled a packed Plaza audience July 13 at a 2010 Santa Fe Bandstand show that was also the kickoff concert for the 5th Annual New Mexico Jazz Festival. Combining jazz with elements of prog rock and even ska, the six-piece 'Things That Are Heard' is long on interesting musical ideas..." -Alex DeVore Santa Fe Reporter
NOW PLAYING - Robert Muller / Ben Wright / Dave Wayne play The Music of Horace Tapscott. The music world is just beginning to grasp Horace Tapscott's towering compositional and improvisational achievements. His music and life story resonates very strongly with me because of his choice to remain in Los Angeles as a sort of musical community activist, rather than chasing jazz stardom (an oxymoron if there ever was one!) or making lots of money in the LA studios. Had he chosen another path (which he easily could have done), today's jazz landscape would be very different, indeed. Instead, he stayed local, acting as a bandleader, mentor and spiritual guide for local musicians - some of whom, such as Roberto Miranda, Sunship Theus, and Arthur Blythe became major musical forces in their own right. Like a lot of 'local' artists, Tapscott's world-class music was documented only sporadically for a handful of tiny record labels - the primary one being Nimbus Records (now based in Albuquerque). "We have chosen music from some of Horace Tapscott's best known CDs (The Dark Tree, Dissent or Descent, etc.) as a vehicle to pay homage to this great man. We'll be stretching Tapscott's piano trio music out in some very interesting ways." Robert Muller -piano, Ben Wright -contrabass, Dave Wayne -drumset
