THE DOWNEASTERS A CAPPELLA CHORUS IN CONCERT at Deertrees Theatre
This 55-man-strong A Capella Chorus returns to Deertrees Theatre to delight, astound, and thoroughly entertain the audiences in Maine on Saturday, August 1st, at 7:30 PM.
WHO ARE THE DOWNEASTERS?
The Downeasters chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society was chartered in 1949 as part of the Northeastern District of the BHS (then the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartetting in America, or SPEBSQSA for short!). Currently chartered in Yarmouth, Maine, the Downeasters Chorus serves the greater Portland area and has members from all over southern Maine.
Since its inception the Downeasters Chorus has been active in its community presenting annual shows to the public and it has become a fixture at the Yarmouth Clam Festival every July, serving Lime Rickeys and music to the festival goers. The Downeasters is active in community outreach performing in 3 or more benefit shows each December, as well as other shows and activities through the year.
The chorus is widely recognized in New England, winning the Northeastern District contest in October, 2009, and subsequently representing the Northeastern District (NED) at the BHS International Convention July, 2010, in Philadelphia, PA. This past October, 2014, the Downeasters earned the right to once again represent the NED at the BHS International Convention in July, 2015. This time the convention will be in Pittsburgh, PA.
