SMCO Season Finale: Mozart, Carter, Ligeti, and Haydn
Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra Season Finale
Mozart: Overture to The Abduction from the Seraglio Carter: Two Controversies and a Conversation Cristina Valdes, piano Matthew Kocmieroski, percussion Ligeti: Mysteries of the Macabre Maria Männistö, soprano Haydn: Symphony No. 100 "Military"
Geoffrey Larson, conductor
While Mozart and Haydn infuse beautiful symphonic and operatic music with militaristic fervor, Carter contemplates the inner game of conversation in this double concerto for piano and percussion and Ligeti pushes the limits of the human voice in this selection of three arias from his opera The Grand Macabre. SMCO explores both contrasting compositional goals and the use of percussion in the Classical era and the modern day in this fiery Season Finale. The ensemble is joined by three celebrated artists whose contemporary performances have been revered in Seattle and around the world.
