Time Lapse Dance presents a studio season featuring the premiere of Jody Sperling's "Turbulence." This new work for six women visualizes patterns of air disturbance into kinetic sculptural forms.
The music, composed by Quentin Chiappetta, was commissioned with funds from the American Music Center's Live Music for Dance program and will be performed live by virtuoso percussionist Tigger Benford. Featuring complex shifting rhythms, the musical score forms a dynamic aural architecture which the choreography reflects with spiraling vortices and rippling waves.
The movement expands on Sperling's many years of fascination with the artistry ofearly modern dancer Loie Fuller. The dancers wear costumes, after Fuller's style, featuring voluminous folds of white silk which billow into captivating motions.
The program also features Sperling's time-sensitive solo"Not Here Yet." As anexpecting mother--who will be sevenmonths pregnant--Sperling plays with how the sense of anticipation of a new life affects the present moment.
The series of performances includes an opening night benefit/reception, a talk-back on Thursday evening and a Saturday matinee with participatory workshop. All performances are family-friendly.
