A Medieval Vespers - the music of Hildegard von Bingen
Vajra Voices, directed by contralto Karen Clark (pictured), sings A Medieval Vespers in celebration of the feminine divine. The 12th century mystic Hildegard von Bingen's monophonic antiphons, hymns, responsories, and sequences are contrasted by some of the earliest polyphony found in the St. Martial collection of manuscripts. Hildegard's enigmatic antiphon O Virtus Sapientiae, Wisdom- or Sophia- praises that feminine divine "energy with three wings who circles circling, encompassing all things." Hildegard's choice of words- and their sensuousness- exemplify what we moderns might refer to as "wholistic," and, perhaps, might associate with deep ecology, wherein the non-human and the human worlds carry equal moral weight.
Vajra Voices, featuring the voices of Ruth Baillie, Lindsey McLennan, Joyce Todd McBride and Celeste Winant made their debut in the 2010 Berkeley Festival and Exhibition of Early Music and have since performed to enthusiastic audiences in Marin, Sonoma County, and San Francisco. Directed by the renowned contralto and voice teacher Karen Clark, the ensemble strives to embody their individual voices and comes together to create a sound that is revered for its clear, pure, strong, and compelling nature.
