Singer-songwriter Dan Hicks is truly an American original. Since the early 1960s, Hicks has deftly blended elements of Swing, Jazz, Folk and Country music to create the appealing sound he sometimes calls "Folk Jazz". The lyrics of his songs range from the simply sublime to the sublimely ridiculous, all presented with his uniquely skewed and inscrutable touch; his irresistible sense of rhythm, hip lyrical styling, laid-back vocalizing, and infamous on-stage wit will make those who see him perform fans for life. By the way, he's a snappy dresser, too. The San Francisco Chronicle wrote, "So few truly original figures exist in pop music that Dan Hicks should be a national treasure."
Hicks was the original drummer and a founding member of the Charlatans, the band that launched the entire psychedelic music scene in San Francisco (predating the Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, and Quicksilver Messenger Service). By the late 1960s he began to devote all of his energies as singer, guitarist, and songwriter to a side project: Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks. Several critically acclaimed and commercially successful albums were produced from 1969 to 1973. Dan Hicks broke up the Hot Licks in 1973, at the height of the band's popularity. After a lengthy hiatus, he resumed his career touring as a solo act throughout the 1980's, before returning to the recording studio in 1998. âDan Hicks and Arena Theater are a match made in heaven,â claimed Timothy Johnson, Executive Producer of the Legends LIVE Series. âDan's unique sense of style helped define hip-ness for an entire generation. He embodies the small town boy made good coming home. And, for one night, Point Arena will be Dan's home.â
To commemorate the event, internationally famed psychedelic poster artist Wes Wilson will create original artwork. The work will be available to collectors in a standard poster format and in a special limited edition quite suitable for framing. Wilson is especially noted as one of âThe Fiveâ, an honored status accorded by the achievements of the historical art movement's most important and revered figures.
