Youth Workshop: ARTivism Camp, June 27 - July 1
Learn how the power of art -- sculpture, theater, photography and writing -- can drive home an issue you care about. For students entering 6th-8th grade, this 5-day workshop occurs from 9 am-2 pm, Monday - Friday, June 27 - July 1, 2011. ARTivism takes place at the Mercy Corps Action Center, 28 SW 1st Avenue, Portland, OR 97204; 503-896-5002.
Registration is $150 plus a ticket fee if registering online. Online registrants MUST still download the registration form on our website and email it to pdxactioncenter@mercycorps.org so that we can process and confirm registration. Registration forms can also be sent to ARTtivism Camp, Mercy Corps Action Center, 28 SW 1st Avenue, Portland, Oregon, 97204. In paying online, your registration forms must be received by June 24.
In this weeklong workshop, we'll combine international issues with art, a practice we call ARTivism. Join us for a hands-on exploration of how sculpture, theater, music, creative writing and visual storytelling can effectively convey important aspects of local and global issues. These workshops will feature artists who share their own creative processes to help you plan and execute your own projects. Each student will create a compilation of work that will go on display on our final day.
Instructors: Julie Koehler has worked on many different projects in Afghanistan, Guatemala, China, and Mongolia. She teaches a course at PSU on Gender and International Development and brings her love of alternative education models to the exploration of the international development field. Kendra Manton has spent the majority of her career in the field teaching experiential education programs around the country and the globe.
