kate kilbane grew up in the theater. The daughter of two English professors, she was acting by 6 and directing at 13. After years of training in classic Greek plays and Shakespeare, she decided to pick up an instrument and render her love of language and her innate sense of the theatrical in an unexpected context: a rock band. At 25, kilbane began writing song cycles that told the stories she'd fallen in love with in the theater.
kate kilbane and the cellar doors are currently in the studio recording the medea cycle, a twelve song rock opera that tells the story of the ancient Greek heroine, Medea. Medea's story is one of a woman who sacrifices everything--her creative powers, her family, and her home--for love. When that love dissolves, she has to decide what she will do with her rage and her broken heart.
kilbane plays bass and sings lead in her band, which includes drums, piano, and several additional voices, and she tells the story of medea in between songs, creating a hybrid form that is two parts rock show to one part theatrical event. she currently performs in san francisco, los angeles, and new york city.
"kate kilbane delivers a raw, passionate sound that's gritty and seductive.
