Goldfinch, Cobirds Unite, Bryan John Appleby
The Warehouse is pleased as punch to bring this amazing bill to our fair city. When you come to be a part of this line-up you will be face to face with Tacoma locals Goldfinch, Seattle legends Rusty Willoughby & Rachel Flotard who, combined with many a talented musician, make up Cobirds Unite, and master lyricist and songwriter Bryan John Appleby. As always, it will be an experience you will not want to miss. Buy tickets now, buy often! Cobirds Unite- Having crafted records for Sub Pop, Sony, and Frontier since 1982, the shy, reclusive Pacific Northwesterner Rusty Willoughby is well loved and cult-followed for his trio of rock/pop bands Pure Joy, Flop and Llama. His new project is Cobirds Unite. Their wonderful songs of lush, intelligent, Americana loneliness hit straight at the soul. With vibraphone, cello, and pedal steel in all the right places, there's a cinematic quality to it that lends itself to introspection and quiet beauty. With Visqueen's front woman, Rachel Flotard. Like Emmy Lou Harris and Gram Parsons, their two distinct voices knit together in a most alluring way. Willoughby and Flotard are rounded out with a brilliant cast of musicians that include Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees), Barb Hunter (Afghan Wigs), Maggie Bjorklund (Mark Lanegan) and Johnny Sangster (Mudhoney). Cobirds Unite has subtly become the name of the band when these fine musicians play out together and they've certainly nabbed the spotlight. www.facbook.com/cobirdsunite
Bryan John Appleby- Sound on the Sound thinks Bryan John Appleby is one of the best emerging songwriters in the Pacific Northwest today (We couldn't agree more). Bryan doesn't sing songs, he tells stories. While his songs feature simple folk picking and strumming, his stories are anything but. Bryan writes carefully crafted tales that sprawl across landscapes of love, loss and the minutiae of complex familial relationships. His songs aren't poetry, they're literature. Bryan impressed the crowd when he headlined our first Best of the New showcase at Columbia City Theater with a newly formed full band, but the adjacent video features Bryan as we first saw him - sparse and solo (save backing vocals and rowing by Campfire OK's Mychal Cohen). If you care as much about lyrics as melody, Bryan John Appleby is about to be your favorite discovery this year. http://bryanjohnappleby.bandcamp.com/
Goldfinch- Tacoma locals Goldfinch will be headlining the night. "Goldfinch's live performances have a perfect, tranquil quality to them. It's like watching a well-oiled machine of melancholy, where harmonized vocals play with themes of forgiveness and loss while floating above tinkling music. - The Seattle Weekly "Some of their lyrics, on which this ancient melody hangs, ask, "Can I wish to hold the weight of heaven?" Each person who attends a show, or listens to their songs must expect to hold this weight in tension along with the pain and hope of the songs sung by our holy irreverent Goldfinch." -Adam Ydstie, Exit133 http://www.myspace.com/goldfinchstatebird
