The Cuban Cowboys

The Cuban Cowboys are a bilingual San Francisco quintet that plays a combination of indie rock and traditional Cuban music, calling themselves the "World's Greatest Cuban Surf Rock Band."
Armed with mambo riffs, swooning surf guitar, and a killer live show, the band is steadily building a following across the US.
"Cuban-American singer/songwriter, guitarist and band leader Jorge Navarro embraces both sides of his hyphenated identity in the Cuban Cowboys, and brings the rollicking energy of rock to Cuban-inflected songs about the shady characters, wayward lovers and exhibitionists he's encountered through stories of old Havana," writes the San Francisco Chronicle.
Navarro's songs portray his family's memories of a mythical Cuba born out of the nostalgia of exile and his experiences as a first-generation Cuban American, immersed in American pop culture and drawn to cowboy boots and rock 'n' roll. These two themes establish the narrative poles for the songs on Diablo Mambo, a 2010 release produced by Greg Landau. Navarro skillfully navigates this bi-cultural territory, spinning tales of romance, sex, politics, and family. "The music plays an essential role in the effectiveness of the stories, weaving together various tributaries from the two main musical streams -- classic rock, punk rock, doo-wop, post-punk, rockabilly, and son, mambo, calypso, and salsa." Tickets for the concert are $15.00, available online at www.arenatheater.org and at local ticket vendors. Members with card will receive $3.00 discount at vendors only. The show starts at 9:00 PM and doors open at 8:00 PM. Youth tickets (17 and under)will be available at the door. The Arena Theater Bar and the snack stand will be open.
