Eli Pariser: What is the Internet Hiding?
Whereas the Internet has long been considered a democratic realm of information sharing, former MoveOn.org executive director Eli Pariser reveals how hidden algorithms have personalized it to an extent that it threatens the democratic exchange of ideas. As more of us get our news online, our past interests determine what we are exposed to, increasingly only showing us information that confirms our beliefs. In The Filter Bubble, Pariser leads us through the causes and consequences of this new online reality and lays out a new vision for the webone that embraces the benefits of technology without turning a blind eye to its negative consequences. Presented by the Town Hall Center for Civic Life, with Elliott Bay Book Company. Series media sponsorship provided by PubliCola. Series supported by The Boeing Company Charitable Trust and the RealNetworks Foundation.
