Guest Speaker:  Vic Skolnick, CAC Co-director

Given its world-wide notoriety, the Sacco and Vanzetti trial, with its many appeals, followed by the execution of both men, was the criminal case of the 20th century.  As the painters, artists, poets, novelists, and songwriters who created artistic commentaries realized, the case revealed dark truths about the United States cultural and legal system.  Putting equal emphasis on legalities and the tragic story of the two remarkable men at its center,  Peter Miller created the first documentary film on the subject. Professed anarchists, the two Italian immigrants were accused of bank robbery and murder.  Presiding judge William Thayer, who once labeled them "anarchist bastards,"  allowed flimsy evidence and testimony on their political convictions.  After numerous appeals, Massachusetts's governor Fuller appointed a three man commission to investigate. They validated the trial and were called "pimps of injustice" by William Carlos Williams. Through interviews with historians and eye witnesses, Miller brings to life the strength and dignity of the accused. Many of the issues the Sacco and Vanzetti case raised: immigration and racism, civil rights and national security, and the nature of the American justice system are crucial in post 9/11 America. –Marty Haas
