Bunker's Love Affair - A talk with John Bunker
Nearly every homestead in America once had a small orchard for making cider. Most of those trees were eventually forgotten or pulled out to be replaced by eating apples, but a few gnarled old specimens still producing real beauties hung on waiting to be re-discovered by a young farmer from Maine named John Bunker.
Founder of Fedco Trees, a grassroots nursery for rare heirloom fruits and vegetables whose catalog is received by expectant gardeners and orchardists like a holy text in wintertime, John has saved nearly 100 varieties of apple trees from extinction.
Join us as this pre-eminent apple and cider expertauthor of Not Far from the Tree, founder of Out on a Limb, a heritage apple CSA program, and driving force behind the Maine Heritage Orchard that preserves indigenous apple varitiestakes us on an entertaining romp through his 35 year history tracking down, identifying and preserving historic apple varieties across America.
Included will be tastes of three ciders pertaining to John's talk.
And afterwards, stay for dinner, or have Bunker's Love Affair (Suze, pommeau, cidre), a cocktail we created that's dedicated to John's work.
