ENSEMBLE & BOARD LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP:
Collaboration and group leadership are at the heart of ensemble artmaking. These strategies can also help boards and ensembles work together, better.
Co-led by a pair of ensemble-based peer experts -- board leader (Gigi Bolt of New York's SITI Company) and an artistic leader (Ryan Hill, Artistic Director and Founding Member of Sandbox Theatre in Minneapolis) -- the workshop:
-- explores individual and organizational leadership styles; -- shares a toolkit for lateral/group leadership structures and practice; -- and covers the basic roles and requirements of boards.
Through participatory exercises, hands-on "what would you do" scenarios, and facilitated discussion, we will unpack our assumptions and explore together some tools and strategies to use in strengthening collaborative leadership among your board, staff, and ensemble.
This four-hour session requires both board and ensemble participation (at least one board and one ensemble member from your organization must attend together as a team). It will be most useful for companies with existing active boards that are now looking to bring their collaborative practice to the next level.
SESSION LEADERS:
Gigi Bolt is a theatre and musical theatre program and philanthropy consultant, and Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University. The Director of Theater and Musical Theater at the National Endowment for the Arts from 1995 through 2006, Gigi advised the agency on policy, created and administered discipline-based agency initiatives, and was responsible for the review of applications from 500 theatres and musical theatres across the country. In 2006-2007 she served as Interim Executive Director of Theatre Communications Group. Prior to joining the Endowment, she was the Director of the Theater Program at the New York State Council on the Arts. Her tenure at the Council was preceded by work as an actor including five seasons as a member of the company of the Cleveland Play House. She serves as Board Chair of the SITI Company, a board member of the William Inge Festival Foundation, on the Theatre Professional Advisory Board at the University of Kansas, and the Advisory Board of Ford's Theatre.
Ryan Hill is Artistic Director and a Founding Member of Sandbox Theatre in Minneapolis. He has a Theatre and German degree from Hamline University in St. Paul, MN, is a Fulbright Scholar, and an alumnus of director Robert Wilson's Watermill program. Ryan has been either Project Lead, performer, playwright or set designer (or any combination of the four) in every Sandbox production. He has created new work with Minneapolis troupes 15 Head: a theatre lab and Live Action Set, as well as companies in Berlin (lubricat theatergruppe 1997-98) and New York (the locust factory 1998-03). Ryan also performed in the American premiere of the Robert Wilson/Tom Waits version of Woyzeck at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2002. Published work includes The Ferry, a 2004 Samuel French Off-Off Broadway Play Festival-winning play. His plays have been seen with various small theatres in Minneapolis, New York, Berlin and Beijing. Ryan serves on the board of the Network of Ensemble Theaters.
