Cooking and Gardening Day Camp
18 Reasons is excited to announce Kids Cooking and Gardening Day Camp, a garden-to-table-inspired day camp for kids ages 8-10 years. The camp will be held July 11-15th, 2011 at 18 Reasons, in conjunction with the fantastic urban farm of Children's Day School.
This experiential and inspirational day camp will give budding chefs and future farmers a chance to cultivate a deep connection between growing and cooking their own meals. Centered around the theme of a pizza party, campers learn about where their pizza comes from and how to make it. Through a series of hands-on cooking, gardening, and creative lessons, campers will learn to grind the grains into flour, make dough, cook and can fresh tomato sauce, pull fresh mozzarella, and hand-crank ice cream. Come Friday, the kids will have a pizza and ice-cream party that they have made entirely themselves.
Details: Each day will begin with morning chores and harvesting at the urban farm and garden at Children's Day school. Campers look after the farm's six chickens, including collecting eggs that will be made into healthy camp snacks and Friday's ice cream treat. They will also tend the vegetable garden, and use the harvest for more snacks and pizza toppings. After a fresh-made snack in CDS's outdoor classroom, kids will return to 18 Reasons for the day's pizza-based cooking activity, art activities and reflective creative time. In between, there will be plenty of outdoor playtime at nearby Dolores Park, lunch, and more healthy snacks. The week will culminate on Friday afternoon with a celebratory pizza party, prepared by and for the kids, replete with just-picked salad greens, freshly-squeezed lemonade and hand-cranked ice cream.
Space is limited so register early to reserve your child's space at the table!
