Sweet Water Miniatures for Home, Office, or School
Come to Sweet Water for a one-day workshop introducing small-scale aquaponic systems and systems that are appropriate for your home, your school classroom, or your workspace. The workshop will include tours of the Sweet Water facility, presentations on existing projects, panel discussions with Sweet Water personnel, and several break-out sessions that focus on: system design, construction, maintenance; connections to school curriculum; and positive community development projects. There will also be a session on vermicomposting. One of the features of the day will be Sweet Water Foundation's partnership with the Center for Veterans Issues and National Association of Black Veterans to construct a small-scale aquaponic system at their facility on 34th and Wells St. The workshop will begin at 8:30am and wrap-up at 4:30pm. There will be social hour afterwards for those interested in sticking around.
Tentative schedule:
8:30-9:30 Tour SWO/F
9:30-10:30 Veterans Presentation and SWF panel discussion
10:30-11:30 Introduction to aquaponics as a growing technique
11:30-12:30 Overview of materials, design, construction, and cost
12:30-1:30 Lunch in conversation groups with workshop leaders
1:30-2:00 Student panel â" aquaponics miniatures and other urban farming projects at schools
2:00-3:00, 3:00-4:00 Break Out Sessions
Participants may choose two of the following:
-Vermiculture in the home/classroom -Barrel-Ponics -Desktop aquaponics -Curricular integration of Aquaponics -Different aquaponics techniques (flood and drain vs continuous flow) -Needs of fish, plants, bacteria and fish/plant options
4:00-4:30 Address remaining questions on the Community Board
4:30-6:00 Social hour
