Trace Ellington
Imagine a 21st century version of Curtis Mayfield or Marvin Gaye, and you're not far off from the funky, contemporary R&B groove of Trace Ellington.
A sparkling batch of modern soul from Trace Ellington -- singer, songwriter, and the sole force behind this sweet batch of tunes! Trace has roots in the midwest, but he's been rolling in California, too -- and it feels like he's absorbed the best of both worlds. The sound is rich with keys -- feeling a bit like the modern Detroit soul of Dwele in parts -- with a maturity, sophistication, and clean sound that has us thinking of Raphael Saadiq, too. -- DustyGrooveAmerica.com, reviewing Ellington's CD, Let Love In
As a branch of the Ellington family tree (the great Duke Ellington is a cousin on his mother's side), Trace is blessed with a diverse heritage that serves as a strong foundation for his music. His multi-talents as a singer, songwriter, and producer only enhance his unique performance style. In addition, Traceâs dynamic stage presence is supported by his mastery of various instruments including keyboard, drum, guitar and bass.
Trace Ellington is a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His lineage traces back to the late great Duke Ellington via his motherâs side of the family. Trace was influenced at a tender age by big band, jazz, classical and the Brazilian music his parents listened to. Among his favorites were Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Billy Eckstein, Beethoven, and Mozart.
In Ellingtonâs high school years, he took up jazz and chorus ensembles. This is when he confirmed he could play anything by ear. In jazz ensemble, he played the vibes (nickname, Dr. Vibes) and xylophone. He auditioned for Kool & the Gang the age of 15 and got the job, though his parents turned down the offer.
Now a music industry and performing veteran, Ellington has been active in recording, producing and even club owning in Chicago, Los Angeles and now San Francisco.
And while all this activity and knowledge is surely impressive, the bottom line is that Trace Ellington delivers great R&B grooves with a distinctly modern feel.
