Under the Big Top
Join the Vanishing Pints, Bayou Swamis, and Absynth Quintet for magical evening of music outdoors under Dell'Arte's Big Top Tent in Blue Lake. Doors open at 5:30pm. Show starts at 6:00.
The Bayou Swamis was formed in 1987 under the name of "Fear Of Frailing" by Randle Lundberg, David Bradley, Kate Koelmel & Chris Chapin, playing Cajun, oldtime & other North American traditional folk genres. Inspired by a Folklife Festival gig in the misty past of the early nineties in which they were accompanied by electric bass and drum set, they embarked down the pothole infested road of electric Cajun/Zydeco music. The members of the band come from a wide variety of the Northcoast's talent of musical acts including The Primal Drone Society, Barking Dogma, The Folkoffs, The Appliances, The Joyce Hough Band, The Country Pretenders, The Brendas, The Empty Bottle Boys, Lance Romance, Dell Arte Show Band, Arcata Playhouse House Band, & The Roadmasters. The current formation of the Bayou Swamis is: Randle Lundberg accordion/fiddle/vocals David Bradley- guitar/vocals Kate Koemel - rubboard/triangle/vocals Marla Joy bass/vocals Jeff Landen guitar/vocals Tim Gray - drums/vocals.
The Vanishing Pints take the folksy and poetic elements of Irish music, run them through a filter of fluctuating attitudes and fermented beverages, and unbottle acoustic based music perfect for a mishmash of merriment. With a rambunctious and irreverent approach, the Pints use their decades of combined musical experience to emphasize malted exuberance and hopped up revelry. With working class laments, sea shanties, drinking songs, and original compositions, Vanishing Pints draw a draught of bubbly licks and tongue twisting phrases, with shots of mournful beauty for good measure. Be forewarned, people tend to break out in carbonated dancing when Vanishing Pints perform.

Absynth Quintet was described by Matt Eakle of the David Grisman Quintet "Great original material, some of the tunes sound like they were written at the height of the bluegrass era, 60 years ago, but about modern subject matter. VERY COOL!" The quintet has played with greats such as Hot Buttered Rum, Emmitt-Nershi Band, Railroad Earth, Devil Makes Three, Rushad Eggleston, Fareed Haque, Leftover Salmon and Matt Eakle of the Grisman Quintet. They are booked to play the Kate Wolf Music Festival in late June.
The Humboldt Folklife Festival is thrilled to have this great line up for you.
Children under 12 are free. Don't miss this event!
