FURY Factory 2011 Presents: Mugwumpin & Band of Toughs
FURY FACTORY PRESENTS A WORK-IN-PROGRESS DOUBLE-FEATURE! (all works-in-progress feature a talk-back after the show)
MUGWUMPIN - THRUM
A kind of alchemy: movement becomes electricity becomes light becomes sound.
Or an invitation: to go slow, to listen, to sit, to vibrate.
To create THRUM, Mugwumpin has teamed up with Bay Area sound artist Anne Allison to create an immersive sound installation that is at once meditative and unnervingly thunderous. Four performers in one space repeat deceptively simple patterns with handheld lights; in another room, familiar technologies translate the performers' patterns into a swirling, consuming cavern of shifting lights and sound, to be felt as much as to be heard or seen.
About Mugwumpin: Mugwumpin was formed in San Francisco in 2004, with the aim of reinvigorating live performance as a communal event. The visceral nature of Mugwumpin performances constantly reminds the audience that they are right here, right now, participating in something unique. Since its founding, Mugwumpin has produced 12 full productions and many smaller scale performances, all Bay Area world premieres. In 2008, Mugwumpin thrilled international audiences at the Cairo International Festival of Experimental Theatre with our original work super:anti:reluctant. Our 2010 piece, This Is All I Need, played to packed houses and universal critical acclaim, recently being named one of the best shows of 2010 by both the SF Weekly and the SF Bay Guardian.
BAND OF TOUGHS - REPRODUCTION
Reproduction. Rights and responsibilities. Interviews and images. Music and dancing. Stacks of plastic babies. Not appropriate for children under 13...unless it is... Band of Toughs is committed to producing original, genre-mashing work that "puts the ass back in passion" and then kicks it! Band of Toughs develops each project in a creative laboratory process and first presents it in a workshop showing, in which the audience is invited to engage in an exchange of ideas as collaborators. Audience responses are incorporated into the ensuing rehearsal process and directly inform the development of the final production.
